Jean B., Verbal Identity Writer

Verbal Identity

Jean B.

Name it and you're halfway there.

Jean B. is a verbal identity writer working on voice, messaging, and names. The job is to build the language a brand speaks in, so that every line that follows is easier to write — by anyone.

Jean spent fifteen years in law before this, drafting documents in which every word had to carry weight and none could be misread. Naming turned out to be the same discipline with better clients.

Selected Work
Studio North — the wordmark in white capitals across a cobalt blue reception wall

Studio North — Naming & Verbal Identity, 2024

A Name and Three Words

A new name for a design studio leaving its founder's behind, and the three words its website opens on: Things that work. Both came from the same sentence in the strategy.

Project Super Jumbo — the name vesper painted large in vermilion on a white fuselage

Project Super Jumbo — Naming, 2026

Vesper

Named a long-haul airline that for fourteen months had only a codename. Its routes were overnight; its position was the night itself. Vesper: the evening star, the first light you see on an evening departure.

Morrow — three cream milk cartons with the name MORROW running up each in dark green capitals, beside a glass of milk

Independent Work — Product Naming, 2024

Morrow

Name and verbal identity for an oat drink made by a dairy co-operative. One word that says tomorrow and sounds like something being poured.

A Kinder Voice — a tram shelter poster at night reading Take your time. in white on blue, a tram passing in a blur of light

Independent Work — Transport Authority, 2023

A Kinder Voice

Tone of voice for a city tram network — every sign, announcement and apology rewritten. Complaints about signage fell by a fifth.

Within the Collective

Jean typically leads naming and verbal identity — voice principles, messaging, the handful of sentences an organisation says most often — and joins alongside strategy, since a name is a positioning in one word. Jean works with V. and the collective's strategists to find the idea, and with its designers, who have to draw whatever gets named.

All project enquiries are handled by Creative Director V. through Influence Design Studio.
